Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow, John Brady has called for urgent Government action to tackle the dangerous and criminal misuse of high-powered e-scooters and e-bikes, warning that the problem is becoming a growing scourge in communities across Wicklow.
Deputy Brady highlighted how communities are enduring reckless behaviour and criminality linked to the illegal use of e-scooters and e-bikes, with reports of ongoing incidents in Bray and across the county leaving residents increasingly concerned.
Teachta Brady said:
“Communities are sick to the back teeth of these high-powered e-scooters and e-bikes bringing havoc and real danger to our communities.
“Those using these vehicles recklessly, speed through streets with absolutely no regard for their own or anyone else’s safety, nevermind the law.
“The consequences of this are all too often devastating.
“We continue to see people, especially children, suffer catastrophic head injuries and other life-changing trauma as a result of their use of these vehicles.
“Children’s Health Ireland recently reported a 50% increase in the number of children and young people being admitted to hospital with traumatic brain injuries as a result of e-scooter incidents.
“Every serious incident leaves families facing unimaginable pain, while every near miss is a reminder that decisive action is essential.
“This cannot be allowed to become the norm.
“There is also a very serious criminality aspect to this issue.
“These vehicles are increasingly being used to facilitate crime, including the delivery of drugs, while also creating a real sense of intimidation in local areas.
“I have received repeated reports of dangerous incidents involving e-scooters and e-bikes in Bray and across the county, where residents have raised legitimate concerns about antisocial behaviour, reckless driving and the blatant disregard for public safety.
“The Gardaí must be given the resources, specialist training and equipment they need to tackle the dangerous misuse of e-scooters and e-bikes, and to remove those being used illegally from our streets.
“Government must also examine how high-powered e-scooters and e-bikes, many of which are capable of travelling well beyond the legal speed limit, can be so easily purchased, often by or for children.
“Our communities deserve to feel safe on their own streets.
“They deserve real action.”
