Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow, John Brady has expressed concern following the publication of the EPA’s Domestic Waste Water Treatment System Inspections 2025 report, which found that 39% of inspected septic tank systems in Wicklow failed inspection last year.
The report showed that 57 inspections were carried out across Wicklow in 2025, with a significant number of systems found to pose risks to public health and the environment through pollution of local waterways and contamination risks to drinking water supplies.
Deputy Brady said the findings highlight the urgent need for continued investment, support and public awareness around wastewater infrastructure.
Teachta Brady said
“The fact that almost four in every ten inspected systems in Wicklow failed inspection is deeply concerning.
“Faulty septic tanks can have very serious implications for public health, particularly in rural communities.
“At the same time, it is important to acknowledge the very positive remediation work that has been carried out.
“The EPA figures show that Wicklow has achieved a 98% remediation rate on the 184 systems identified as failing since inspections began in 2013, one of the strongest records in the state and reflects the efforts of households and local authority staff working together.
“Grant supports must remain in place and be expanded where necessary to ensure that no household is left behind.
“Many families want to do the right thing but are struggling with the financial burden of remediation works.
“We need a balanced approach that protects our environment while supporting rural communities and households in meeting these standards.”
