Serious concerns still remain after Government’s last-minute SNA U-turn – John Brady TD

Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow, John Brady, has said that despite the Government’s last-minute U-turn on proposed changes affecting Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), serious concerns remain for families across Wicklow.

Teachta Brady said:
“The Government’s last-minute U-turn on changes to SNA provision has come only after enormous pressure from parents, SNAs, teachers and students.
“While families in Wicklow will be relieved that immediate cuts have been paused, the unnecessary distress and uncertainty caused cannot be brushed aside.
“Parents across Wicklow were left fearing that vital supports for their children would be reduced or changed without clarity, consultation or a proper plan.
“Simon Harris and his Government colleagues must apologise and explain how they allowed such confusion and fear to take hold.
“In addition, there are still fundamental flaws at the heart of how special education supports are structured and delivered. A temporary pause or additional funding announcement does not address the deeper issues, including outdated guidance, and a lack of long-term certainty for schools and families.
“In Wicklow, I have been contacted by parents who are exhausted from constantly having to fight for basic supports for their children. They deserve stability, clarity and a system that works, not crisis management and political damage control.
“What is needed now is a clear commitment that SNA supports will be protected and strengthened based on need, alongside proper engagement with families, SNAs and school communities.
“Wicklow children with additional needs cannot be treated as an afterthought. The Government must move beyond last-minute U-turns and deliver a sustainable, properly resourced special education system.”
