Wicklow Sinn Féin TD John Brady has lodged a formal complaint with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about the worsening odours coming from the sewage treatment plant at the Murrough in Wicklow Town. In 2019 following a complaint to the EPA by Deputy Brady a number of measures were taken at the plant to address the issue. Deputy Brady has said that the issue wasn’t adequately addressed, and immediate action is required to resolve the issue once and for all.
After visiting the plant with several local people Deputy Brady said “The persistent and worsening issue of foul odours from the sewage treatment plant at the Murrough in Wicklow Town has become intolerable. Despite several measures taken in 2019 following complaints I made to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the problem has not been adequately addressed.
Residents, businesses, and visitors have continued to suffer from the appalling stench, which not only impacts their daily lives but also negatively affects the town’s reputation and tourism. This is an unacceptable situation that demands immediate action.
The measures put in place five years ago have proven insufficient, and it’s clear that a more comprehensive, long-term solution is urgently needed. Irish Water and the relevant authorities must prioritise this issue and work swiftly to resolve it, ensuring that the necessary upgrades and maintenance are carried out to stop these odours once and for all.
The community deserves better than to be subjected to this ongoing nuisance. I will continue to press for stronger interventions and ensure that this issue is not neglected any longer. The health and well-being of the people of Wicklow Town must come first, and it’s time for decisive action to address this unacceptable situation.” Ends
