Community activist and West Wicklow Sinn Féin candidate for the local elections scheduled to take place this June 7th Aidan Kinsella has criticised the failure of the council in Wicklow to address the impacts of neglect across rural Wicklow.
Speaking in Carnew he drew attention to the failure of the Council to address the state of the main street in the town. The speed ramps along the main street are lethal, they are full of potholes and pose a serious danger to all road users. The pedestrian crossing probably shows best the neglect of rural West Wicklow, its full of potholes, the markings have long worn off and none of the flashing amber lights to indicate the presence of the crossing are working.
Kinsella said:
“I have been campaigning for years to overturn the ongoing neglect of rural Wicklow. My own area here in West Wicklow has been hit more than most. It’s simply not good enough.
We pay our taxes here the same as anywhere else in the country, and we have a right to expect that rudimentary repairs are carried out as necessary to ensure the proper maintenance of basic infrastructure in the area.
The main street in Carnew has been allowed to deteriorate to an unacceptable level by Wicklow County Council. And I think that questions need to be asked of the sitting Councillors for the area as to why this is being allowed to happen.
The state of the road, with potholes, the damaged speed bumps is bad enough, but the pedestrian crossing is not fit for purpose, it fails everyone, pedestrians and motorists. This should not be allowed to remain in this condition.
I am calling on Wicklow County Council to immediately prioritise these repairs. The failure to address these matters to date, has to be a matter of concern for residents. It is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.”
