John Ward selected for co-option on to Wicklow County Council

Sinn Féin has selected John Ward for co-option to replace Dermot ‘Daisy’ O’Brien as the Councillor for Bray West on Wicklow County Council.

A lifelong Republican and member of the Mulvey Cumann in Bray West, Ward has lived in the Oldcourt Estate for the past 30 years with his wife, Claire and family. 
Ward has been heavily involved with Bray Emmets GAA Club for many years as both a player and mentor. A passionate hurler, he has served as player-manager of the junior team since 2012, leading teams to multiple championship successes. He has also contributed to hurling development squads and committees, supporting the growth of the game at grassroots level. In recognition of his commitment and service, he was named Bray Emmets Clubman of the Year in 2025.
Outside of sport, Ward has worked as a barber for 40 years, including more than two decades serving the Bray community. Through this role, he has built strong relationships and developed a reputation for being approachable, grounded, and closely connected to local concerns.
Speaking after the selection convention
, Ward said:
“I am proud and honoured to have been selected for co-option to take on a position that was so well performed by Dermot ‘Daisy’ O’Brien. I have seen first hand the commitment he brought to the people of Bray and I am determined to continue that work.
“I have always believed that Sinn Féin reflects my values, standing for a united Ireland and putting communities first. I am committed to listening, engaging, and delivering for local people – I want to ensure that the voices of Bray residents are heard and acted upon.”
Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow, John Brady again paid tribute to the work of Dermot ‘Daisy’ O’Brien and congratulated Ward on his selection:
